Facelift / Rhytidectomy

Due to aging, environmental factors, and the overall effects of gravity, facial tissues tend to lose their elasticity, and deep creases begin to form. This is most obvious with sagging in the jowls and neckline. A facelift operation is designed to remove this excess skin. The best candidates are healthy individuals most commonly in the 40- to 60-year-old range, though older patients can also benefit from the operation. While a facelift does not stop the aging process, it can “set back the clock” a number of years. A facelift can make you look younger and fresher, allowing you to feel good about yourself. The effects of a facelift are lasting. Years later you will continue to look better than if you had never had a facelift at all.

The operation is typically done under general anesthesia and takes an average of 3 to 4 hours. Incisions are inconspicuously placed in the hairline and in front of and behind the ear. The loose skin is separated from the underlying tissues which are then tightened. The excess skin is redraped into position and removed. A facelift is often done in combination with a forehead lift and/or eyelid surgery.

Following surgery you can expect your face to feel tight and numb with some bruising and swelling. You will feel uncomfortable but pain is usually minimal. A large gauze bandage is placed on the face and is changed the following day. If help is available you may go home, but if not you may stay overnight in the hospital. We will begin removing your stitches 5 to 6 days after surgery. Your activity will be limited for several weeks.
